The Philippine Embassy in Paris led by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Aileen S. Mendiola-Rau grace the commemoration of the 124th martyrdom anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal with flag-raising ceremony and flower offering at the Embassy grounds on 30 December 2020.

Paris, 30 December 2020 - In commemoration of the 124th martyrdom anniversary of Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Paris held its customary outdoor flag ceremony and flower offering.

Since France continued to enforce sanitary measures following the second lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the very recent arrival of the new viral strain in the country, the Philippine Embassy was unable to organize an expanded gathering to include the members of the Filipino community leaders for this year’s Rizal Day commemoration.

The officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Paris, together with colleagues from the Philippine Trade and Investment Center and the Office of Police Attaché pose for a group photo after the ceremony on the occasion of Rizal Day held at the Embassy grounds.
The Philippine Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Ms. Aileen S. Mendiola-Rau said, “While we cannot physically come together for this historically important day for our country, I encourage our kababayans to take time today to pause and think about the life of Dr. Jose Rizal and how his sacrifice had paved the way for us to be a free people.
I invite you to revisit the Embassy’s book The Philippines and France: Discovery, Rediscovery, specifically Part 2 which talks about Rizal in France. Many of the places that he visited are still in existence and may be familiar to a lot of you. Perhaps the next time you pass by them, you will think about how these places and the democratic ideals of the French had inspired Rizal to bring change to our own country.”
