17 December 2013 – H.E. Cristina Ortega, Ambassador of the Philippines to France, witnessed today the signing of the ASEAN-UNESCO Framework Agreement for Cooperation at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
Also present during the signing were ASEAN Secretary-General Le Luong Minh, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, as well as representatives from the other ASEAN Member States. According to Mr. Le Luong Minh, the agreement was a milestone since it was the “first agreement to be signed between ASEAN and a UN organization”.
The agreement aims to create synergies between the two organizations and build on UNESCO’s bilateral cooperation with the individual ASEAN Member States in view of the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015. The agreement focuses on seven priority areas: education; science technology and innovation; disaster risk education; environmental sustainability; social and human sciences; culture; communication and information.
The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is the goal of regional economic integration by 2015. AEC envisages a single market and production base, a highly competitive economic region, a region of equitable economic development, and a region fully integrated into the global economy.END
